SEPTEMBER 2023 NEWSLETTER
Dear Friends
September has been a busy month in my studio. Two watercolour workshops; 15 ink drawings for the Inktober H.O.P.E. Basket Auction; and preparations for the Open Studio in early November, have kept me productive and happy.
September is also Heritage month and the beginning of Spring, which means some serious gardening.
Highlights in this month's Newsletter include our guest crafter, Tara, who creates funky hand-painted bags and rucksacks from recycled denims. I explain what Inktober is all about and challenge you to get creative with ink. Keep reading to find out more...

Inktober
Inktober happens in October, when people throughout the world are challenged to create drawings in ink. The idea is to use the daily prompts that are provided to create an ink drawing a day for the month of October … or one a week … or what about just one for the month! You then share your drawings with others on social media or post it on your fridge!
Challenge
The collage is of subscribers’ ink drawings from 2022. As you can see, they range from stick figures to masterpieces! So get out your pens and inks, do a drawing, and send it to me on WhatsApp or as an attachment on e-mail. You may use the prompts (which will be posted on 1 October), but any theme or subject matter will do. I’d love to include your drawings in next month’s newsletter.
Make a Bid
The excitement mounts as the count-down to my Inktober auction begins! This year I’ve decided to create 15 ink drawings to auction off for my church’s H.O.P.E. (Help Other People Eat) Basket.
Every second day in October, I will post one of my ink drawings on WhatsApp and on my website. If you love it, make a bid for it. It's a perfect opportunity to own one of my original, signed ink drawings from as little as R50 - all in aid of charity.
The opening bid is R50 per picture, and thereafter bids go up by increments of R10 for that picture. You have until 10 November to bid on as many drawings as you like, as often as you like! The highest bidder buys the drawing.
With a nod to Heritage Day, I asked subscribers to send me their favourite South Africanisms. Here is a list of 20 of the most popular submissions:
'n boer maak 'n plan; dop & tjop; braai; listen my friend; koeksisters; ag shame; popped his clogs; now-now; ja-nee; sharp; howzit; doss; safe my mate; sarmi and slap chips; ja well no fine; flicks; ja; robot; lekker like a cracker
Can you think of a few more?

Open Studio-Gallery Weekend
The dates for the Open Studio-Gallery Weekend have changed to the first weekend in November i.e. Saturday 4 November and Sunday 5 November, 11am – 4pm. There will be more info in the October Newsletter, but in the meantim, save the date!!!
Hats off to Jenny's Hat
The invitation to Jenny and Bob's 70th Birthday Garden Party read: "Wear a hat or a fascinator". I'm sure many ladies clapped their hands with glee and gave a delightful squeal at the prospect of dressing up to suit the hat. I, on the other hand, ... READ THE FULL ARTICLE IN MARIA'S MUSINGS

Guest Crafter: Tara Pluke
Tara from "Out of the Ashes" uses recycled denim to create her funky hand-painted bags and rucksacks. She called her business "Out of the Ashes" because God turned her “ashes into beauty”. What a powerful testimony! https://www.facebook.com/tara.pluke
